Team Smart Metrolac from the Department of Computer Engineering, University of Peradeniya, secured first place at AgriTech Start-up Spark 2026, organized by the Young Members’ Section of the Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka (IESL YMS). The team emerged as the winner among 45 teams competing in the final round.
Their project, Smart Metrolac, is an IoT-based measurement system designed to replace traditional glass metrolacs with precision gravimetric sensing. Developed for the Sri Lankan rubber industry, the system combines real-time spoilage detection with cloud-based data tracking to improve measurement accuracy and transparency.
Smart Metrolac aims to provide a fraud-resistant solution that supports fair trade for farmers while helping industrial collectors obtain accurate measurements. By combining sensing technology with digital records, the project seeks to build greater trust and accountability in the rubber collection process.
The team comprised Nandun Manilgama, Manodya Perera, Dananja Rukshan, and Hiyumi Suriyapperuma. Their achievement highlights the potential of engineering innovation to address practical challenges in agriculture and industry.
Congratulations to Team Smart Metrolac on this accomplishment and for bringing recognition to the University of Peradeniya. We wish the team continued success as they further develop their solution.
