A team of third-year undergraduate students from the E21 batch of the Department of Computer Engineering, University of Peradeniya, secured the 1st Runner-Up position at the NetX IoT Challenge 2026. Organized by the IEEE Student Branch and ComSoc of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, the competition took place on 13 September 2026 at the Faculty of Engineering, University of Sri Jayewardenepura.

The team showcased Smart IV, an innovative medical IoT device developed to improve the safety and reliability of intravenous (IV) infusion in hospital wards. Designed for manual gravity-fed IV systems, Smart IV monitors drip flow in real time, estimates the remaining fluid volume, and detects unusual conditions, including flow interruptions and empty IV bags.

The system delivers alerts through local, desktop, and mobile interfaces, enabling healthcare staff to respond promptly to potential issues. By reducing the need for repeated manual checks, Smart IV aims to ease the workload of nurses in busy hospital environments while supporting better patient safety and more reliable IV infusion management.

The team comprises Pavindran Velalagan, Shagiththiah Kirupakaran, Paarkavi Jeyatheeswaran, and Abdul Latheef Mohamed Suthail, who are currently third-year undergraduate students of the Department of Computer Engineering, University of Peradeniya.

This recognition highlights the team's dedication to innovation and their ability to apply IoT technology to practical challenges in healthcare. Their achievement reflects the value of developing technology-driven solutions that address real-world needs and contribute to improving patient care.
