PeraCom Undergraduates Emerge Champions at Code with WIE 2025

A team of final-year undergraduates from the Department of Computer Engineering, University of Peradeniya, secured first place at Code with WIE 2025, the seventh edition of the annual innovation challenge organized by the IEEE Women in Engineering (WIE) Sri Lanka Section.

Held under the theme “Empowering Innovation for a Sustainable Future,” the competition aims to inspire young innovators to develop impactful technological solutions addressing real-world challenges. The grand finale took place on 18th October 2025 at the Informatics Institute of Technology (IIT) City Campus, Galle Road, Colombo.

Out of 100 participating teams, 45 teams advanced to the qualifier round, and 12 outstanding teams were selected for the final showdown. Demonstrating exceptional creativity and social relevance, the Peradeniya team clinched 1st place for their project “OceanEyes”, an Autonomous Sea Pollution Detection System designed to monitor and analyze ocean pollutants using intelligent sensing and machine learning technologies.

The winning team, (from left in the picture) Rashmi Gunathilake, Wethmi Ranasinghe, Dulanga Jayawardena, and Kasundie Hewawasam, all final-year undergraduate students of the Department of Computer Engineering, carried out the project under the supervision of Senior Lecturer Dr. Isuru Nawinne. Their innovation and dedication mark yet another remarkable achievement for PeraCom students.
