Sandali Lokuge, Shyaman Jayasundara, and Puwasuru Ihalagedara, recent graduates of the department (E/14) have been recognised by a national award: 1st  Runner-up of the Best Research Awards 2021 competition organized by the Institute of Applied Statistics Sri Lanka (IASSL) under the open category. The awarding ceremony was held on Sunday, 27th March 2022 at the auditorium of The Organization of Professional Associations of Sri Lanka. The chief guest was Dr. D.M.J.B Senanayake, Director of Rice Research and Development Institute. The award was given by Dr. R.A.B Abeygunawardena, Secretary of IASSL.
The awarded research was an extended version of their final year research project on “plant microRNA prediction using machine learning models”, which was supervised by Dr. Damayanthi Herath, (Senior Lecturer, Department of Computer Engineering, Faculty of Engineering University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka) and Dr. Indika Kahanda (Assistant Professor, School of Computing, University of North Florida, United States). Their research work has also been published in 2020 IEEE Conference on Computational Intelligence in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology (CIBCB), and in the journal, Biosystems. The project was also nominated for the “Best Research Article” in the ESCaPe 2020, the annual project symposium of the Department of Computer Engineering.
